Maverick’s and Moss Beach are where I came from before I parachuted in to Kelowna…  We always knew when Mav’s was breaking…the windows in my house rattled at the incredible noise level from the surf across Highway One.  Brine suds lined the beach and the air was filled with the smell of saltwater mist that obscured the sun.  The Coast Guard once stupidly tried to place a hazard buoy right in Maverick’s break… We laughed and  bet how long it would be before the buoy was dislodged and end up stranded on the beach.  Six months later the buoy was retrieved from the beach, and no new buoy replaced it. That is the power of Maverick’s.  My “crew” included some of those portrayed in the film, and also those not portrayed in this film…Jeff, Grant, Flea, Doc..  My next door neighbor, Art Comito, now in the Florida Keys, organized all the parties at his house.  The Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and the rest of it, were the view from our house….
Few know that the opening scenes from the film, Memoirs of a Geisha, were also filmed at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve… right below our home.
